What Hiring Managers Want

Medix Staffing Solutions, Inc. offers insight on how to prove you’re the perfect job candidate

(Lombard, Ill.) Jan. X, 2012 – When interviewing for a job, you’re most likely not the only candidate who can actually do the work needed to be successful. How will you stand out? Medix Staffing Solutions, Inc., a national staffing organization specialized in recruiting skilled personnel for clients in the Professional Services, Life Sciences, Healthcare and Information Technology industries, offers a look at what hiring managers’ look for in job candidates.

“There are certain core values that really stand out to recruiters and hiring managers,” said Carrie Losch, Senior Corporate Recruiter at Medix. “Yes, we want candidates who have the skills to actually do the job, but candidates who have specific traits, like a good work ethic and confidence, really catch our attention.”

Every industry attracts different types of candidates, but hiring managers everywhere can agree that these values shine:

Good Work Ethic

Hard workers are a huge asset to any organization. They walk in each day ready and willing to go the extra mile for their team, and it’s no secret that companies want these people.

“This value may seem obvious, but not enough candidates know how to play it up,” said Losch. “The most effective way to prove you have an outstanding work ethic you’re a hard worker is to find strong references, like former supervisors or professors, who can vouch for your work ethic.”

Managers want employees who will follow through on assignments and commitments, even if they’re complicated, boring or stressful. Show your interviewer you’re trustworthy by giving examples of important or difficult assignments given to you and how you worked on them from start to finish.

A self-starter is heavily sought after. Interviewers are looking to see if you can be self-directed enough, without a lot of hand-holding, to give 110 percent when needed. If there were times during previous employment or schooling when you went above and beyond without much direction, be sure to talk about those times during your interview.

Hiring managers want candidates who will mesh with their teams, work well with coworkers and who are likeable in general. Reference checks are also good way find this characteristic, but hiring managers will still want to get a read of you in person, so be sure to let your personality shine during your interview.

“A hiring manager can read you the moment you walk through the door and shake his/her hand,” said Losch. “We like to see confidence within a candidate, so dress well, walk tall, use a firm handshake and make good eye contact. These may seem like small details, but they can make all the difference.”
