Pay it Forward: Kindness Wins

Yesterday, as I was surfing through my newsfeed on Facebook, I noticed that several of my friends were talking about and liking the same picture. Interested in finding out what the viral story of the day was, I clicked on the link.

I come to find out a dad from Tennessee had witnessed a really beautiful moment at Chick-fil-A while he was out to lunch with his daughter. He subsequently posted a photo online with a caption that explained what he had seen.

A homeless man entered the restaurant and asked if there was any leftover food that they could spare. Without hesitation, the manager said he would provide him with a full meal. His only stipulation was that the man allow the manager to pray with him.

The man who snapped the photo wrote:

“People near him kept their distance, but that didn’t stop him from being kind. He spoke to people who reluctantly spoke back, and he smiled while he waited on a manager. All I could pick up on of the conversation was the manager saying that he’d love to give him a full, warm meal–not just scraps or extras–, and the only thing he required was that the man let him pray with him. After the homeless man agreed, there was no waiting for things to die down, there was no scooting anyone to the side. As busy as they were, the manager stopped then and there, laid his hand on the man, and proceeded to pray. I heard love in that prayer.”

What a beautiful moment.

We are gifted chance encounters everyday. This is an example of seizing the moment and making the most of one of those encounters. Not only did the manager show grace and kindness to that homeless man when he clearly needed it, he was also a shining example to that little girl who was out to lunch with her dad, as well as every single one of us that has laid eyes on that Facebook post.

Kindness always wins, folks.

  1. That story was beautiful. Very touching. Pay it forward is one of my favorite movies.
I once read that every action we perform has a rippling action throughout the world. I always hold a door for someone and smile and say hello. It may seem simple but that small deed can brighten someone’s day.
