Tips for Leading Your Team Through the Fast-Approaching Holiday Season

We are half-way through November, meaning the holidays are almost here! Before you break out the eggnog and cookies for a celebration, you must remember that work doesn’t disappear just because the holiday season is here. As a leader, one of your biggest responsibilities through the season is to make sure the holiday turmoil doesn’t completely derail your teammates, their projects or even big-picture company initiatives. Follow these tips for guiding your team:

Communication

Set the standard for good communication this holiday season. Ask your teammates to send a team email the day before a personal day, reminding everyone of their absence to help ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Like any standard you set, it will only work if you follow along, too. Properly communicate your personal time, so you don’t accidentally leave anybody hanging.

Stay Organized

With everyone coming and going, it can become difficult keeping yourself and your team organized. Try to keep tabs on what projects your teammates are working on, their progress, what they will need from you and who is specifically doing what in the team effort. Ask your teammates to send you reports on certain tasks at least once a week. This can help you make certain that details are not being forgotten and everyone is on the same page.

Be Flexible

As we stated, work doesn’t go away just because it’s November and December, and as a manager, you need to make sure that work is getting done while accommodating your team and their needs. Yes, it’s a tricky balance to strike! Consider flex hours during the season to help. If a teammate needs to leave a couple hours early to pick up a family member from the airport, let them know that’s fine so long as that time is made up to some extent.

Get into the Spirit!

The holiday season is a great time for togetherness and teambuilding, so get into the spirit with your team and volunteer together, organize a gift exchange or throw an office party. As a leader, you have the ability to make the holidays fun for your team, while remaining productive.
