How to Improve Communication Skills in the Workplace

We are amidst the generation of technology! iPhones and laptops and tablets galore!

Although burying your head into your cell phone may be the easy way out of speaking to others, I’m afraid it’s causing some harm to your communication skills. With rise of technology comes the opportunity to avoid human interaction altogether. In fact, according to U.S. Smartphone Use in 2015, 46 percent of people say they “couldn’t live without” their cell phone. How sad is that?

As a tip, keep in mind that fine tuned communication skills can be a huge asset when creating your professional network, interviewing for potential jobs and even establishing relationships in the workplace.

It’s time to brush up on you communication skills! Here’s some things to think about:

Listen up: Never, ever underestimate the power of cleaning out your ear wax and taking a seat. In order to figure out the wants/needs of clients and colleagues, you need to be able to open up those ears. It also shows respect to fellow coworkers and team leaders.

How do I do this?: Make certain you understand the different modes of communication in the workplace. When is it appropriate to send an email, stop by the office or give your boss a ring? With that being said, make sure whatever you are saying is clear and concise. Time is of the essence these days!

Body language: How many times have you heard the phrase “actions speak louder than words?” Whether it’s making eye contact with your boss, slouching during a meeting or speaking with a far off tone, nonverbal communication plays a critical role in how people receive your message. There are times where we send mixed messages without intention, which makes it all the more important to be aware of our communication tactics.

Technology overload: Even though mobile devices serve many useful purposes, they can also be detrimental to our social skills. Instead of staring at your phone on the commute home or during your lunch hour, try striking up a conversation with a coworker you’ve hardly talked to before. Our peers are far more interesting than we give them credit for!

  2. I’m 200% for open communication (face to face). People are so comfortable hiding behind their phones, until they miss the most important advantages open communication brings. And this is, a clearer understanding of what you’re saying & how u hear it. Eye to Eye contact is awesome!

  4. I advise avoid using “text messaging” as a form of communication with clients and co workers. A non verbal alternative is electronic mail also known as “email”.

  5. Verbal communication is more important then e-mail or texting, although they have their place.
    people cannot hear your tone of voice, your sincerity, etc. in an email or a text. personal contact is the best way to communicate and make a real, lasting impression and possibly friend.
