Workplace Wardrobe Basics

Every morning you wake up and muddle through your morning routine, which is pretty much second nature by now. Then, it comes time to get dressed. How many times have you been running late because you can’t find the tie that goes with your shirt or the right pair of flats that match your earrings? We’ve all been there.

When starting a new job, first impressions are always lasting impressions and a part of that includes your appearance. Generally, as your time at the office continues, the longing to be comfy at your desk arises. Don’t let this feeling make you a sloppy dresser.

Companies implement dress codes for a reason and there’s no reason to let these rules inhibit your work. Consider the tips below for easily putting together a winning workplace wardrobe:

Business Professional

Business professional means dressing like you are going on your very first interview. Suits are strongly recommended and an overall clean, crisp and appropriate look are expected. Make sure your appearance matches up with how you want your company to be portrayed.

Suggestions include:

  • Men
    • properly fitted suit
    • clean tie
    • formal dress shirt
    • dark socks
    • nice shoes
  • Women
    • properly fitted suit
      • if wearing a skirt, make sure it’s the proper length
    • nice blouse
    • close toed shoe
    • limited jewelry

Business Casual

Policies differ among companies when it comes to business casual. Make sure to read up on your company policy or ask your peers about dress code regulations. Even though the word ‘casual’ is in the phrase, you still need to look crisp, clean and appropriate. A good rule of thumb is you should still be able to wear the outfit into a meeting with the CEO and feel comfortable.

Suggestions include:

  • Men
    • blazer
    • Trousers
    • button down shirt
    • more casual shoes and socks
  • Women
    • blouse
      • some patterns and color
    • dress pants
      • if skirt, note the length
    • closed toed shoes
    • limited jewelry and accessories

Casual

Typically, very few companies implement a completely casual dress policy. With that being said, some companies and on special occasions such as Friday’s or random holidays, might allow the office to dress casually. In these cases, it is important to note that you are still in a business setting and attire should remain appropriate for the occasion.

  • Men
    • nice jeans
    • button down shirt
    • dressier shoes and socks
  • Women
    • nice jeans
      • appropriate length skirt or dress
    • blouse
    • appropriate accessories

At the end of the day, it is better to be safe than sorry and take the more conservative route when suiting up for work. If you have any fashion advice for the workplace, please share below:
