From Our Recruiters: My Best Advice for Job Seekers

So we asked a couple of our recruiters for their top job search advice to help guide you along your path to finding your dream opportunity. Check out what Brandy, Carrie, Coltlee and Edmond had to say: 

Be Ready, Follow Up and Network
Brandy – Corporate Recruiter

“First, be prepared. Know what you have applied to, research the company, how your skills align with the responsibilities of the job and have good questions ready. Next, think good follow up! You should write a ‘thank you’ to your interviewer and restate why you want the job, what your qualifications are, how you might make a significant contribution and then ask about the next step or timeframe for hearing back. Finally, network, network, network! In a world of ‘apply online,’ your application can easily get lost in the Internet black hole. It is important to use sites like Linked In to your advantage. Connect with employees at your desired employer, ask them questions about what they like about their position and then find out the best way to get in touch with hiring managers.”

Think Outside of the Box
Carrie – Senior Corporate Recruiter 

“Searching for jobs can be a full-time job in itself, and sometimes it feels like your resume or application just goes into a black hole. I always tell candidates they need to think outside of the box when applying to positions. So many people go to the job boards to see which companies are hiring, and while you should absolutely do this, you should also try to find other methods to secure employment. Here are a few ideas:

  • Always ask your friends and family for advice and to update you on potential openings they hear of within their companies.
  • Drive around the area you would like to work in and look at the companies lining those business parks. Take a note of who they are, and then look them up directly.  Their own career pages will have all of their openings, because this is free for them. Job boards are expensive, and there are quite a few smaller companies that do not use them.
  • Follow companies on LinkedIn. You will be able to see if they are hiring, as well as connect with people at the organization. You will even be updated when people leave or promote out of a position. This gives you a heads up on new openings!” 

Be Known
Coltlee – Case Management Recruiter

“In today’s job market, it’s all about who you know and who knows you! Networking and social media should be two key components of your job search. My best advice is to build a strong Linkedin profile, make personalized connections, join groups and be sure to get recommendations. Remember – this is a company’s first impression of you!”

Remember Your Resources, Be Different and Think Teamwork
Edmond – Clinical Research Recruiter

“My most important piece of advice is to utilize all of the potential resources that you have at your disposal and think outside the box. Regardless of the method you’re using to find openings, instead of blindly fishing your CV/resume out to 100 different companies, refine your search. Do some research, read job/company descriptions and target a handful that fit what you really want to do. Go a step further and utilize other resources (LinkedIn, social media, friends, networking contacts, etc.) to find out more about potential employers that you want to work for. Do what others won’t do to set yourself apart from the crowd. Be aggressive, and directly contact the hiring manager. Take the extra time to write out and mail a ‘thank you’ note instead of e-mailing them. It’s all about finding a way to be different.

If you’re utilizing a recruiter to help with your career search, remember that it’s a team effort, and that they are ultimately there to work for you. Develop a strong working relationship with them, and really let them know what’s important to you as you progress throughout your career path. The more they know about you, the more they can educate their clients on why they think you’d be a perfect fit with their organization.”
