Many, many job seekers have begun 2014 with the goal of finding a new job opportunity. Since the job search is all about setting yourself apart from the crowd as the best candidate for the position, it may seem impossible to break through the noise, but it’s not. There are ways you can stand out and show hiring managers you’re a top candidate. Follow these tips to set yourself apart in 2014:
Join a Professional Organization
There are tons of professional organizations out there, so there is most likely a group for your industry. Many of them have dues, but trust us, the networking and learning opportunities they present can be worth their weight in gold! Furthermore, having a name of an organization on your resume will catch a hiring manager’s eye, and show him/her you are a candidate who is passionate about the industry.
Tap into Your Network
You have spent years building a network of former colleagues, supervisors and teachers who can attest to your skills, work ethic and character – why not put a special emphasis on this resource in 2014? If someone in your network is hiring, or knows somebody who is hiring, that personal connection will result in your name standing out among the countless people who submit their resumes online.
Build a Portfolio of Work
A great way to set yourself apart is to prove you have the skills to succeed, and one of the best ways to do that is by having a professional portfolio of past projects. You can do this in either hard copy by bringing your past work into a job interview or online by sharing a link with the hiring manager. Not every industry allows for a professional portfolio due to the nature of the job or even legal reasons, but if you can show your work, take that opportunity.
Take Advantage of Social Media
Social media gives users a powerful channel to let their voices be heard. As a job seeker, use these channels to demonstrate industry knowledge and passion, find open opportunities that might not be on the job boards and even build your network. Remember, keep it professional!
A new opportunity is within reach in 2014! Follow our tips, set yourself apart from other job seekers and land your new job!
