Love is in the air! Not love for your friends, family, significant other or even pet, but for your next job search! I know you’re probably thinking, “Love trying to find a job? That’s crazy!” but with the right mindset, a little hard work and some lovable tips, you’ll be playing your own Cupid in order to find a job you love to do.
Planning the perfect date takes time, effort and organizational skills, much like a job hunt! In lovey-dovey situations, dates are planned out ahead of time with specific ideas, set reservations, plans for transportation – the list goes on. Treat your job search like you would if you were planning the perfect date. Try creating a checklist ahead of time with line items, such as:
- LinkedIn profile completed
- Resume submitted
- Contact with employer made
- Interview date set
We all deserve the best, but in any realistic love life or job search, rejection hits like a ton of bricks at some point or another. Yes, it’s devastating, but next time it doesn’t have to be that awful if you set realistic expectations from the beginning. Patience is key. Anyone who’s been through a job search knows the process can be anything but short and sweet. Every employer’s hiring process is different in length. Roll with the punches, nail the interviews and don’t set your heart wholly on one opportunity.
Absolutely No Pickup Lines
Sure, silly pickup lines can sometimes help to break the ice, but for the most part using something like, “I’m not a photographer, but I can picture me and you together” won’t do the trick. Just like a potential date, employers can smell a phony, canned line from a mile away. With that in mind, make sure the information you put on your LinkedIn profile, resume and cover letter is accurate and up-to-date. Lying or using cliché information, like “I’m a people person,” will elicit eye rolls from many potential employers and could hurt your chances are being considered for the position. Be as candid as possible and you’re bound to find the perfect match for you!
Love Yourself First
Always put yourself first! If your current situation is bogging you down, focus on self-care and get to the bottom of what will truly make you feel happy, healthy and fulfilled. Knowing and loving yourself is the key to finding a job that will put a spring in your step every day. Consider making a list of your hobbies, tasks you enjoyed at previous jobs and any special skills you know you excel at. Based on your list, design your job search around opportunities that align with those characteristics. There’s an old saying that goes, “do what you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” Approach the job search with the same mindset you look at love; whatever makes your heart happy, pursue that option.
Ironically enough, love and job searching can go hand-in-hand. During your next job hunt, consider the tips above, and hopefully you’ll end up with your perfect match! Do you have any job search love advice? Please share below:
