It’s quiz time, job seekers! How should you prepare for behavioral and personality tests on the job search?
While you consider your answer, it might be helpful to revisit what exactly behavioral assessments (also known as personality tests) are exactly. As we’ve touched upon previously,
“Odds are you’ve taken an exam like this, even if you don’t really realize it. Behavioral assessments can include a variety of questions and prompts about your skills, interests and personal drivers, and may be presented with multiple choice (A, B, C or D) and Likert scale questions (‘on a scale of 1 to 5…’). They’re designed to act as ‘a systematic evaluation of candidate personality profiles used to gauge the viability of a candidate based on things like culture fit, work style and potential.‘”
Basically, employers use these tests as a tool for learning more about job candidates. Think of it as a way to go beyond the usual materials, such as resumes, interview responses and job applications, in order to understand applicants on a deeper level. The information gathered can be extremely helpful in connecting job seekers to career opportunities that match their skills, motivations and personality.
However, if you’re not prepared for behavioral and personality tests, it can be a bit jarring to be faced with one. In an instant, job seekers are transported back to the feeling of not studying for that big test back in grade school.
“How am I supposed to respond?”
“What are they looking for?”
“Can I cheat off of anyone?”
