During a job interview, you need to not only make a good impression, but a memorable impression. We asked our Corporate Recruiter, Carrie, some questions on how you can make yourself stand out among other candidates as the hiring manager’s top choice. Here is her advice:

What should I wear? Is there a certain color?

“I am old school, so I would say the standard black and blue, but more than anything, make sure you dress professionally in a suit (if the position warrants it). Also, always make sure your clothes are pressed, and remember that your shoes are key, too. Don’t wear shoes that are too worn; you need your feet to look sharp too!”

Should I bring anything with me besides a couple copies of my resume?

“Resumes are key, but so is a padfolio or something professional-looking to use for note taking. A ‘brag book’ with examples of work is also a great thing to bring if the position warrants.”

What types of questions should I ask that can help me stand out?

“Ask questions about top performers in the role or a similar position. ‘What are they like, what do they do, what attributes do they have?’ Then dig into expectations, like 30-, 60- or 90-day plans. What do they expect you to accomplish? Then ask the staple question, ‘What are you looking for in your ideal candidate?’ Get to know what they want in the role, and you can then answer with things that fill those needs.”

What little things can I do to make a difference?

“It sounds simple, but most people fail to research the company and/or the position. You need to make sure that you understand the ins and outs of the role and what the company does. Make sure to Google search them, read the website and then sell your strengths.”

How soon should I send a thank you note afterward and what should I write in it? 

“Email is totally acceptable this day and age, and it should be sent within 48 hours of an interview, because most interviewers gather to download on candidates the same week they interview them. If they are wavering on you as a top candidate, a well-written and timely thank you note may get you that second interview.”
