Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the millions of mothers making an impact on lives worldwide. This includes the growing number of mothers in the workforce who find themselves not only supporting a growing family, but also pursuing their career goals.

According to the most recent information available from the Pew Research Center, seven-in-ten moms with kids younger than 18 were in the labor force in 2015, up from 47 percent in 1975. Additionally, mothers are spending more time in the labor force than in the past – 25 hours a week in 2016 compared to nine hours a week in 1965. This is also coupled with a rise in time spent on child care time – 14 hours a week compared to 10 hours a week in 1965.

While the time being devoted to both work and family by mothers in the workforce continues to rise, the number of hours in a day isn’t changing anytime soon. This begs the question – How are mothers in the workforce balancing career success and family fulfillment with the time they have?

To get the inside scoop, we asked some of Medix’s very own moms to share their thoughts about pursuing professional goals while raising a family:

“It’s hard work. Being a working mother is seemingly impossible in a lot of ways, but especially so when you’re focusing on advancing in your career. At times, I have having internal battles with myself around ‘mom guilt’ and ‘manager guilt.’ There’s never enough time to dedicate to both to reach my expectations and goals! Medix has been an amazing organization to work with throughout my transition to motherhood. I couldn’t be more grateful to work for such a family-centered company.”

“Since becoming a mom, I’ve struggled so much with mom guilt; the biggest guilt being not spending every waking moment with my daughter. It doesn’t help that society can sometimes be judgmental and look down on mothers who choose to have a career. As a mother to a beautiful daughter, it’s my responsibility to teach her to be independent, to teach her to work hard, to teach her to believe in herself to achieve any career she chooses – and thus I choose to lead by example by pursuing my career.”

“Becoming a mother has given me a whole new perspective on my professional goals and aspirations. I am motivated each and every day to come in and accomplish my work – not only for myself – but now for two little ones that will one day look up to me and my husband as role models. Being a working mother is definitely not easy. I constantly battle the feelings that I need to be at the office more digging in with my team and feeling like I need to be at home and not missing out on each ‘first’ moment with my children. I am fortunate enough to have a team and husband that are so supportive of me, my personal and professional goals, and willing to lock arms with me to ensure we are achieving milestones together which helps make being a working mother enjoyable for me.”

“Being any type of parent, working or staying at home, is hard, fulfilling work! You are responsible for raising little people, instilling values, morals and developing them into well-rounded, good people. I take that role very seriously, but I also value my career – a lot.
