Nothing says the holiday season quite like decorations! How could all of the twinkling lights, sparkling tinsel and green trees not put you in the spirit of the season? A lot of people enjoy spreading this holiday cheer at work along with their homes, but you need to be cognizant of these things before plugging in the blinking lights on the walls of your cubicle:
Ask for Permission
Every company is different, so you can’t just assume it’s ok to decorate your office space. Ask HR and your boss if you’re allowed to decorate and if there are any building regulations you need to know about. The last thing you want is to get in trouble for something silly like decorations.
This goes without saying, but everybody doesn’t celebrate the same holidays you celebrate, so it’s important to keep that in mind before your hang the tinsel. You need to make sure your decorating doesn’t offend or make others feel uncomfortable. Out of courtesy, ask your cubicle neighbors if they’re ok with holiday decorations.
Don’t Go Overboard
Just because you’re allowed to decorate doesn’t mean you’re allowed to deck all the halls in holiday cheer. Your coworkers might not want their desks covered in glitter, so keep it simple and contained in your personal space.
Don’t Make it Distracting
If your boss is letting you decorate for the holidays, don’t make him/her regret it because it’s distracting you and your coworkers from your work. Again, keep it simple and in good taste.
Holiday decorations are a great way to celebrate the season, but it’s important to remember to be respectful and courteous to your boss and coworkers. Have a great holiday season, everyone!
