You are in complete control of what comes next in your life! That can be utterly terrifying and exciting at the same time.

Unless you are absolutely certain of the career or job you want to pursue, finding your way can be hard. There’s a saying “if you don’t try, you’ll never know.” The hard part is choosing the best and right time to make a switch if you’re feeling unsatisfied. If any of the following indicators of unhappiness at work stick out to you, it may be time to re-think your career or job:

Short-term mindset

If all you can think about is surviving another day, another week or another month, it’s time to go back to the drawing board. Try creating a 3-5 year plan, a year-long plan and a six-month long plan. This will put you in a spot to make a decision about next career steps. Everyone has to start somewhere! There will always be that first job. While short-term jobs and goals are a step in the right direction, it’s time to start considering the long-term.

Lack of challenges

Successful professionals crave great challenges. They invest time in personal growth through acquiring new knowledge, learning new skills and achieving small goals every single day. Once you stop feeling challenged, it’s time for a change. Think about what motivates you right now. Do you feel bored? Do you look forward to tackling each day? Are you performing to the best of your abilities? Feeling uninterested in your work is a key indicator that you need a change. To make your next step easier, consider what made you makes you feel excited and focus on work that you look forward to doing.

Unhealthy lifestyle

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” – Buddha

The first step in succeeding in anything is investing in yourself! Without a healthy body, healthy mind and healthy lifestyle, it will be impossible to focus on achieving goals and working hard. If your current situation is taking a major toll on your body, it’s likely time for a change. From a tough commute, to physically hard labor, or even long hours that keep you from sleeping, there are small indicators that could mean you need a big change. Listen to your body!

Negative atmosphere

The people who you surround yourself with and the environment you choose to work in will shape the professional you will become. Strive to work with driven, positive and encouraging people. If you find yourself dealing with negative or toxic coworkers every day, it’s time for a change! Think about the traits in friends, family and previous coworkers that you did enjoy. When you make the change, look for those!
