We all have made some sort of professional goal. Whether they are weekly, quarterly or yearly, it’s important to have something to work toward. As other things pop up throughout the work day, it can be all too easy to lose sight of what we want to achieve. Follow these tips to help yourself stay on track toward your professional goals:

Make them Manageable

It is easy for a goal to backburnered when it seems impossible. It can also be difficult to see the progress on a large goal that seems intangible. Break these large goals into smaller, more manageable ones, and set deadlines accordingly. Don’t just say you want that promotion; set benchmarks, such as completing a successful initiative or leading a team, so you have smaller goals that will set you up to achieve your larger ones.


Sometimes, vowing to hold yourself accountable isn’t enough. In these types of cases, a little external support from your teammates can go a long way. Talk to a mentor and/or your office buddy about what you hope to achieve. Even just talking about your goals to others out loud makes us prone to work harder toward them.

Strike a Balance in Expectations

It’s important to always be realistic, yet know you should never give up. Sometimes, we can be more ambitious about our goals as we are setting them, but don’t lose heart if reality makes you alter them a bit. Perhaps you had a goal of getting a raise, but the economy shifts and your company has a couple low quarters of revenue. You can’t beat yourself up and/or give up entirely, especially if the circumstances are out of your hands.

With the right mentality, those lofty goals you made at the beginning of the year are still within your reach!
