We’ve all heard it – “Work smarter, not harder.” But what does that really mean, and how is working smarter different from working harder? After you spend hours on a project only to realize there was a much quicker way to accomplish your goal, trust us, you will understand. In honor of Workaholics Day, we wanted to give you tips to help you work more efficiently without packing on stress and extra hours.

When you’re swamped with work, cleaning might seem like a waste of time. In reality, if you organize your surroundings, you will feel less overwhelmed. What’s worse – spending time organizing or spending time digging through piles to find that one paper you need?

Don’t Multi-Task

Just admit it – nobody is good at multi-tasking. When you’re busy, multi-tasking might seem like the only option to get your work done, but it may actually harm your work quality and add to your stress. Take it one thing at a time for your sanity’s sake.

Avoid Distractions

Avoiding distractions and interruptions when you’re busy might be the best thing you could do for yourself. Shut your office door, turn your phone on silent and exit out of your email, because when you’re busy, a quiet work environment is a productive work environment.

Before you sit down and start cranking out work, make a prioritized list of what needs to be done. Using a critical eye will help you determine how you should devote your time and what needs most of your energy. If you start with the big things first, the little issues could even take care of themselves before you get there!

Ask for Help

If you have a trusted teammate, consider asking him/her to be your extra set of hands. You might feel guilty adding to a teammate’s plate, so be sure to return the favor one day.

At the end of the day, working smarter is great for your work quality and stress levels. If you follow these tips, you can be certain you’re using your time more efficiently. Happy Workaholics Day to all you busy bees out there!
