Medix Delivers 12 Qualified Medical Directors in 3 Days to Keep Health Plan Hiring on Track

New technology is modernizing utilization management (UM) by streamlining workflows and reducing administrative burden, but Medical Directors still need the clinical judgment, health plan experience, and productivity to make sound medical-necessity determinations at scale.

For one large regional health plan, a redesign of its utilization management organization created an urgent need for experienced Medical Directors. The health plan’s internal Talent Acquisition team was already recruiting, but traditional physician hiring was not moving quickly enough. Medix stepped in with a scalable, contract-based recruiting model built around experienced health plan talent.

About the Client

  • Large regional health plan with a significant Medicare Advantage presence
  • Part of a broader healthcare organization with thousands of health plan employees
  • Redesigning its utilization management organization through a UM redesign
  • Building physician capacity to support a technology-enabled UM model

The Challenge

The health plan needed Medical Directors who could contribute quickly in a highly specialized environment. Candidates had to bring state-specific licensure, health plan utilization management experience, board certification and the right clinical background, along with the ability to make independent medical-necessity determinations.

Previous recruiting efforts had surfaced qualified physicians without health plan experience, but the ramp-up was lengthy. After a three-month notice period, physicians new to health plan operations could require another six to nine months to learn the environment and reach full productivity.

With the organization redesigning its UM model, that timeline created a significant gap between hiring a physician and having that physician fully operational.

The Solution

Medix partnered closely with the health plan’s leadership to supplement its internal recruiting efforts with a dedicated national search for experienced Medical Directors.

The strategy focused on finding physicians who already understood health plan utilization management, allowing them to bypass much of the learning curve associated with entering the payer environment for the first time. Medix screened candidates against the health plan’s specific licensure, certification, specialty and experience requirements, while also evaluating their ability to manage complex cases and perform in a high-volume, technology-driven setting.

The approach delivered an immediate pipeline. Within three days of qualifying the search, Medix submitted 12 qualified Medical Director candidates. The program then evolved into monthly hiring classes, giving the health plan an ongoing source of experienced physician talent as its needs grew.

The Results

  • 12 qualified Medical Directors submitted within three days
  • 5 Medical Directors hired to date
  • Monthly hiring classes established to support continued growth
  • Multiple Medix-supplied physicians launched together within training classes
  • One Medical Director began taking cases in week two and reached the expected 55 cases per day within three to four weeks, well ahead of schedule.
  • Continued national recruiting pipeline supporting changing licensure, specialty and experience requirements

That ramp-up speed represented a meaningful operational advantage. Rather than waiting months for physicians to learn health plan operations, the health plan could add experienced Medical Directors who were positioned to contribute quickly.
