MedixFlex® Creates Capacity for Epic Innovation and Reduces Operational Costs

Every hour spent maintaining today’s Epic environment is an hour not spent building tomorrow’s.

Healthcare organizations are under constant pressure to modernize. Epic initiatives, digital transformation, facility expansions, interoperability efforts, and workflow optimizations all compete for the same limited technical resources as organizations continue navigating ongoing healthcare IT workforce challenges. Meanwhile, support tickets, system enhancements, Epic implementation support, and day-to-day operations continue uninterrupted.

As routine support consumes more of an IT team’s time, innovation naturally slows. One regional health system found itself balancing that reality while managing a growing portfolio of Epic initiatives. To maintain operational stability without delaying critical projects, the organization partnered with Medix Technology, leveraging MedixFlex®—its managed operations solution for Epic and Workday environments. Through embedded Epic-certified analysts, MedixFlex helped the organization run, maintain, and optimize its Epic environment while creating capacity for strategic innovation.

About the Client

  • Regional, multi-site health system serving diverse patient populations across multiple communities
  • Complex Epic environment supporting inpatient, ambulatory, revenue cycle, and specialty clinical operations
  • Managing ongoing Epic optimization while advancing strategic technology initiatives
  • Focused on improving operational performance without expanding permanent internal headcount

The Challenge

Like many healthcare organizations, the health system needed its internal Epic analysts to support daily operations while advancing a growing portfolio of strategic initiatives.

As support requests accumulated and new work continued to arrive, internal teams had less capacity for long-term innovation. Leadership needed a way to maintain day-to-day Epic operations without pulling experienced analysts away from strategic projects.

The organization needed a flexible partner capable of integrating with existing teams, adapting to changing priorities, and providing the operational stability that would allow internal experts to concentrate on higher-value work.

The Solution

Medix Technology deployed a team of 10 Epic-certified MedixFlex analysts who served as a quality extension of the health system’s IT team for nine months. Free from rigid service level agreements, the team adapted as priorities evolved, giving healthcare IT leaders the flexibility to respond to changing operational demands.

As MedixFlex analysts managed day-to-day Epic support, reduced ticket backlogs, and addressed new requests, internal Epic teams regained the capacity to focus on strategic initiatives instead of routine operational work. By assuming responsibility for the organization’s Run and Maintain activities, MedixFlex created the operational stability needed for internal teams to dedicate more time to innovation, optimization, and transformational technology projects. The team also mentored newly Epic-certified analysts, helping accelerate onboarding, build technical confidence, and strengthen the organization’s internal capabilities.

By taking ownership of day-to-day Epic operations, MedixFlex created the capacity internal teams needed to focus on higher-value work, keeping critical technology initiatives moving while maintaining a stable, high-performing Epic environment.

The Results

Created Capacity for Strategic Innovation

With MedixFlex managing day-to-day Epic operations, internal analysts shifted their focus to high-value technology initiatives without compromising operational support. Client feedback reinforced the impact. One manager shared that “a single MedixFlex analyst created the equivalent capacity of two full-time equivalents (FTEs),” while another described the engagement as “filling a void they didn’t even know they had.” Leadership also noted that MedixFlex “allowed them to take on multiple projects that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise, while expediting the timeline of many others. These high-impact initiatives directly impacted patient care.”

Most importantly, MedixFlex gave internal teams something that had been in short supply: the capacity to focus on innovation instead of interruption.

Supported Enterprise-Wide Epic Initiatives

During the nine-month engagement, MedixFlex analysts helped the organization balance daily Epic operations with an ambitious portfolio of strategic work. The team supported six major Epic implementations while also contributing to Community Connect initiatives, facility transitions, system integrations, and ongoing optimization efforts across revenue cycle, ambulatory, inpatient, and specialty clinical operations, including pediatrics and radiation oncology.

Because the engagement remained flexible, analysts shifted alongside the organization’s priorities rather than working within a fixed scope, helping maintain operational continuity while enabling critical technology initiatives to move forward.

Maximized Technology Investment

Beyond expanding internal capacity, the MedixFlex engagement generated projected savings of more than $331,000, representing a 21.4% cost reduction compared to traditional consulting models. By reducing reliance on traditional consulting models while expanding internal capacity, the health system maximized the return on its technology investment and established a more sustainable approach to ongoing Epic support.

Build the Capacity to Move Healthcare Technology Forward

Maintaining today’s Epic environment shouldn’t come at the expense of building tomorrow’s. Strong Run and Maintain support frees internal teams to improve workflows, strengthen patient care, and accelerate digital transformation.

MedixFlex® provides healthcare organizations with Epic-certified analysts who integrate seamlessly with internal teams, manage day-to-day operations, and create the capacity needed to drive long-term innovation. Whether you’re reducing ticket backlogs, optimizing Epic, or preparing for your next major initiative, Medix Technology is ready to help your team move forward with confidence.
